Summer Associates

Program philosophy

The Strauss & Troy summer associate program is designed to hire, train and retain highly qualified law students.  We view our summer associates as the future of our firm.  As a result, we do not hire more second-year summer associates than we anticipate needing as future full-time associates upon graduation.  This eliminates competition among the firm's summer associates for offers.  As a result, we can focus on your professional development.  We have a remarkably high retention rate among our summer associates and full-time associates, which is a testament to our summer associate program and firm culture.

In addition to our second-year law students, we generally recruit and hire one or two first-year law students. Our first- and second-year students participate in the same program and are assigned work from the same pool of projects.

Assignments

As a summer associate, you will be given meaningful assignments from attorneys in all of our practice areas.  Through weekly meetings with the summer program coordinator, we monitor the number of assignments you receive and the practice areas of your assignments, so that you gain the broadest experience possible.  You will work closely with assigning attorneys to complete your assignments.

The assignments you are given are intended to become work product that is actually used in assisting our clients.  We also strive to give you the opportunity to experience what it is like to practice law at Strauss & Troy.  In the past, our summer associates have had direct interaction with clients and have attended depositions, hearings, trials and real estate closings.

Mentoring

At the beginning of the summer, we assign a mentor to you to assist with your professional development.  This senior associate or junior partner will be your "go to" contact for answers to any questions you may have concerning the firm, the practice of law, or any other issues you may wish to discuss.

Feedback

You will receive feedback on your progress and completed assignments from your mentor throughout the summer.  In addition, all of the summer associates meet together each week with the summer program coordinator to discuss your completed projects, those that are in progress and the quantity of your work assignments.  In addition to the feedback we provide you, we encourage input from you about your work assignments and any experiences you may desire.

Social events

We have several informal social events throughout the summer to provide you with the opportunity to interact with the lawyers in our firm outside the office.  These events will give you insight into our firm culture and our emphasis on personal as well as professional development.

Becoming a summer associate

We participate in on-campus interviews for second-year law students beginning each September at several law schools.  In addition, we welcome résumés from any interested law students.  Résumés from first-year law students are welcomed after December 1st of each year.  You may submit your résumé, transcript and writing sample to Charles Ashdown, recruiting committee chair.
